Business First of Buffalo - by David Bertola
Western New Yorkers want more access to health care and are afraid rising costs will prevent them from being able to access it in the future.
Those are some of the results of a two-year information-gathering initiative where 1,700 in more than 100 meetings in eight counties shared their thoughts about the state of the health care system and what they’d like to see more of.
Through the process, Reaching For Excellence: Community Vision and Voices for Western New York Health Care, information was gathered by health-care consumers to learn what the concerns are of those who use it.
Ann Monroe, president and CEO of Community Health Foundation of Central and Western New York, said when the Berger Commission came out with its recommendations that affected the area, the views of those who use the system were not clear.
Community Health Foundation, along with P2 Collaborative of Western New York Inc., John R. Oishei Foundation and the University at Buffalo Regional Institute, comprise One Friday Four Futures, an initiative to listen to consumers and learn about issues important to them.
Reaching for Excellence’s project sponsors had sought to engage the community in an open dialogue about health and health care. From January 2008 to March 2009, One Friday built a composite picture of what health-care users would like the system to deliver in 10 years.
The information was used to provide recommendations to policy makers regarding proposals to aspects like costs and access to care.
“If we are going to reform the health care system, then we need to listen to the health care consumer, and that is exactly what we’ve engaged in the last two years.”
Leading off a daylong session at WNED-TV studios in Buffalo, Monroe was joined by Oishei Foundation President Robert Gioia and P2 executive director Shelley Hirshberg of P2 to share the five main concerns among Western New Yorkers.
The top priority, according to 83 percent of conversations with respondents, was the human connection between provider and patient. Respondents wanted to feel more like a person was being treated and less of a condition.
This was followed by the notion of smoother process needs to be created to obtain care, discussed in 73 percent of conversations. More education to make proactive decisions about individual health (70 percent), preventive care options (65 percent) and increasing access to care (65 percent) founded out the top five.
The morning session was followed by a detailed presentation to 300 attendees from health care and other related fields, regarding the findings. Next steps are to develop tactics to address them.
