Health insurers push for prostrate care guidelines
March 12, 2010
Business First of Buffalo - Tracey Drury
Updated: March 17, 2010
The region’s three major insurers have begun an initiative aimed at developing consistent prostate cancer care guidelines among providers.
The initiative is being pushed by Univera Healthcare, BlueCross BlueShield of WNY and Independent Health. It’s aimed at bringing together competing providers at Roswell Park Cancer Institute and WNY Urology Associates, as well as smaller urology practices, primary care physicians, the P2 Collaborative of WNY and the University at Buffalo.
Representatives of the groups met in January, with a followup meeting scheduled for late March. The goal is to develop standard methods of care and educational materials based on national guidelines, says Dr. Robert Holzhauer, Univera Vice President and Chief Medical Officer.
“There are different treatments that are appropriate for folks in different stages of their lives,” he says. “There’s no one-size-fits-all type treatment available for prostate cancer, and we want to make sure that patients take part in a process of informed, shared decision making.”
