Cancer groups combine on funding issues
A local cancer coalition has affiliated with another area collaborative.
The Western New York Cancer Coalition in January signed an agreement with the P2 Collaborative of WNY Inc. making the coalition the cancer arm for P2.
The coalition’s membership includes more than 60 area organizations – including the American Cancer Society and Roswell Park Cancer Institute – as well as nonprofits, hospitals and universities. The group was formed last spring to help implement the nine goals of the New York State Comprehensive Cancer Control Plan. The plan is intended to serve as a road map to reduce cancer rates and improve outcomes for people with cancer.
The local coalition is initially focusing on four of those goals: early detection, health promotion, public policy and research. The group also serves as an opportunity for collaboration, says Ashwani Rajput, a surgical oncologist at Roswell Park and outgoing chairman.
“People check their egos at the door, realizing that one group or one organization can’t do everything, especially in this economic climate,” he says. “So if we partner together to do some of these things and apply for grant money, that just makes it more successful for everyone.”
Rajput says the agreement with P2 helps prevent duplication while multiplying the coalition’s resources significantly.
“Cancer is another area they wanted to get involved in and rather than reinventing the wheel, they would want to do what we’re already doing,” he says.
Already, the coalition has won two foundation grants, including one that addresses the Southern Tier from Eastern Tennessee State University Center for Appalachian Studies program. The group has just applied for research funds through the National Institutes of Health.
P2 focuses on improving the overall health of the community. It is among 14 communities funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s Aligning Forces for Quality initiative.
“We kind of cross-fertilize from our work groups that are already working on these issues,” says Shelley Hirshberg, executive director of P2. “If this works, we can also use that model for other chronic conditions.”
