It’s been almost a year since the Breastfeeding Friendly Program was nominated for the Spotlight on Population Health (SOPHi) Awards. We followed up with Courtney Gfroerer, Marketing & Community Impact Specialist for the Child Care Resource Network to learn more about the program.
Tell us about the Breastfeeding Friendly Program.
Child care programs can apply to become Breast Feeding Friendly Certified. By doing this, child care programs can help moms and babies successfully develop and maintain a breastfeeding routine. While there are many great reasons to become BFF Certified, like the fact that breastfeeding can help keep costs down for families, one of the best reasons is that meals containing breast milk are reimbursed by the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) – the federal food program that many child care providers already participate in, and all are welcome to join.
What need is this program addressing?
This program is helping families who need or choose to use child care continue their home routines. Just because children are cared for in a different environment while their parents or guardians are at work doesn’t mean they can’t still be breastfed.
Who is your target clientele?
We hope to attract all child care providers in Erie County to become a part of this program. That’s hundreds of child care providers affecting thousands of children and families!
How many people do you serve?
277 individual child care programs.
What is something you’re proud of regarding this project?
Child Care Resource Network has helped the highest percentage of family and group family child care providers in New York State become BFF Certified – Erie County is #1! In Erie County, 57% of family and group family child care programs are BFF, largely through the efforts of CCRN’s CACFP program, compared to a rate of just 12% throughout New York State.
What’s the best way for someone to contact you if they have more questions?
Child care programs, parents, or families can always call us for information or questions about the BFF program. It is free and simple for child care providers to become certified! We can be reached at 716-877-6666.
