According to the 2008 End-of-Life Care Survey of Upstate New Yorkers, nearly nine of ten local adults said it is important to have someone close to them making medical decisions for them if they were to have an irreversible terminal condition and were unable to make these decisions. Yet less than half have designated a spokesperson to assure their wishes are carried out. According to a report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nationally, approximately 70% of the population does not have an advanced care plan.
Move over Ice Bucket Challenge. National Healthcare Decisions Day (NHDD) has "The Dare." That's right. Let's see if we can create a viral movement that changes the way people think about advance care planning. We're officially challenging everyone who receives this to a dare. WE DARE YOU to have the talk about advance care planning, Pick Your Proxy, and dare others as well! When you do, share it on whatever outlet you prefer and use #PickYourProxy (and #NHDD) wherever possible.
National Healthcare Decisions Day exists to inspire, educate, and empower the public and providers about the importance of advance care planning. Post a picture of you on Facebook with your proxy between April 8th and April 22nd, tagging @P2WNY, to be entered in to win a restaurant gift card (value of $50)!
